10 — THE CHAMELEON
I don't know just how you do it,
But it's lasted for so long,
This ageless feud that carries on
Between sense and sensibility.
And I would never change you,
But right now, at this moment,
There's a fire burning through me
And it throws me into chaos.
Then impatience takes possession,
And I lose my balance, lose my harmony.
A chameleon is what you are.
You change your colour, change your mind,
Yet always remain true to yourself.
Iridescent, yet unchanged!
When I look for you, you're always there,
And so there is no way out,
I remain suspended halfway
Between sense and sensibility.
And so this dark disease will never pass,
It makes even the salt seem flat and bland.
A chameleon is what you are.
You change your colour, change your mind,
Yet always remain true to yourself.
Iridescent, yet unchanged!
Together we keep changing shape,
Always different, always us.
Indivisible, if you want!
Yes, there are gaps, you know,
In everything I feel inside,
But honesty is what I place
Between sense and sensibility.
And you, however fickle,
Needn't love me against your will,
Because I'm standing here,
Right here at your disposal.
And so this madness has no remedy:
To hate you, yet still want you here with me.
A chameleon is what you are.
You change your colour, change your mind,
Yet always remain true to yourself.
Iridescent, yet unchanged!
A chameleon is what you are.
You change your colour, change your mind,
Yet always remain true to yourself.
Iridescent, yet unchanged!
Loving someone consistent is difficult enough.
Loving someone who changes colour, opinion, temperature and direction, while mysteriously remaining entirely themselves, requires a certain appetite for risk.
Or for madness.
The Chameleon is a song about the most exasperating form of desire: one that cannot choose between irritation and attraction, surrender and resistance, the need to understand and the temptation to surrender to confusion.
Because some loves cannot be resolved, tamed or brought to reason. They change with the light, change their skin, change their mood.
And that is precisely why they remain.
Iridescent and unchanged.
